Colonel Adye served with the Royal Artillery during the Crimean War and later in India during the 1857 Uprising. In 1883 he was appointed Governor of Gibraltar, where he became known as a painter. He wrote a number of books detailing his military career including A Review of the Crimean War (1859) and Recollections of a Military Life (1895).
