ROGER FENTON (1819-69)

Guards Hill Church Parade Balaklava in the distance

1855

RCIN 2500530

Towards the end of March, Fenton made a number of views from ‘Guards Hill’ looking down towards the harbour of Balaklava. The ‘church parade’ referred to in the title is the parade of Scots Fusilier Guards seen to the right of the image. Although the group is indistinct, the bearskin hats of the Guards can be clearly distinguished.

From the collection of the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII
