ALLAN RAMSAY (1713-84)

Queen Charlotte (1744-1818) with her two Eldest Sons

c.1764-9

RCIN 404922

Queen Charlotte is shown with Prince Frederick, later Duke of York, on her lap, and Prince George, later George IV, at her side. Ramsay’s talent as an incomparable painter of women can be seen in the elegance, subtlety and exquisite colouring of this painting, in which he combines the grandeur of a royal portrait with the intimacy of a domestic scene. Probably painted for George III or Queen Charlotte
