AMADÉE FORESTIER (1854-1930)

The marriage of TRH the Duke and Duchess of York, 6 July 1893

1893

Watercolour | 22.8 x 31.7 cm (sheet of paper) | RCIN 920841

During their two-month engagement, the Duke of York and Princess May saw little of one another but corresponded often. They were married during the tropical July heat of 1893 in the Chapel Royal, St James’s. In this watercolour, Queen Victoria sits on the right and Princess May’s mother, a rather substantial lady, has on this occasion been flatteringly squeezed into the dress with the blue striped skirt (left).
