At 02:15 on 10 October 1961, 264 people were evacuated from the British Overseas Territory of Tristan da Cunha when its central volcano erupted. The islanders travelled via Cape Town to England and were housed in Southampton. They returned in 1963 and it remains the most remote inhabited island in the world.
