Princess Elizabeth

1951

RCIN 2943182

After their marriage, the couple were properly known as the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, and from July 1949 lived in Clarence House, London. When this photograph was taken, Princess Elizabeth was dividing her time between Malta, where the Duke was posted, and Britain for family life and official duties. In the meantime King George VI’s health was failing. Following the King’s death on 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth became Queen Elizabeth II.
