Collecting cartes-de-visite was a craze of the mid-nineteenth century that was also embraced by members of the royal family. Both Queen Victoria and Prince Albert were enthusiastic admirers of photography and eager collectors of the medium. They enjoyed arranging photographs systematically in series of albums, such as this one, arranged by the Prince Consort and entirely dedicated to artists, including figures such as George Frederic Watts, John Gibson, Moritz von Schwind and Carl Haag.
