ATTRIBUTED TO ANNIBALE CARRACCI (BOLOGNA 1560-ROME 1609)

A presumed self-portrait

c. 1575-80

RCIN 902254

The brothers Annibale and Agostino Carracci established an informal academy in Bologna that insisted on drawing from life as the foundation of artistic practice. These two drawings seem to be self-portraits by Annibale and Agostino respectively. The apparent ages of the sitters would date the drawings to the same period, and they may have been created at exactly the same time, in a spirit of gentle competition.
