PAUL SANDBY (1731-1809)

The Norman Gateway and Moat Garden, Windsor Castle

c. 1770

RCIN 914535

The gardener is the only human figure in this watercolour, which depicts the garden situated in the dry ditch surrounding the Round Tower at Windsor Castle. Many artists depicted gardeners at their work but only rarely were they made the solitary subjects of garden views.
