This silver table was commissioned by William III for the Drawing Room at Kensington Palace in 1699, possibly to a design by Daniel Marot (1663 – 1752), who also worked as a garden designer for William III at Hampton Court Palace. Silver furniture was a French fashion which had spread from the court of Louis XIV. The inclusion of the pineapple at the crossing point of the stretchers here may have been intended as a pointed reference by William III, a Dutch prince, to Dutch horticultural supremacy over the French. It was a Dutch horticulturalist who first successfully grew fruit from the pineapple plant in 1687.
