HENDRICK DANCKERTS (C. 1625-C. 1685)

Hampton Court Palace

c.1665-67

RCIN 402842

Hendrick Danckerts was born and trained in The Hague but settled in England after Charles II’s return to the throne in 1660. This painting by Danckerts shows the east front of Hampton Court Palace. In the centre is the great canal, known as the Long Water, excavated during 1661 – 2 in front of the old Tudor façade of the palace. Stretching for one mile, and flanked by a double avenue of lime trees, the Long Water was one of the first major demonstrations of continental Baroque garden design in England.
