Badges associated with chivalric orders could be highly decorative, often incorporating expensive enamelwork and precious stones. Such items were important and fashionable status symbols throughout the period – they were male accessories that also served the purpose of identifying the wearer within an exclusive group and emphasising his connection to the court. The wearing of such items was not limited to ceremonial occasions – indeed they were worn on a regular basis with fashionable clothing and armour.
