GUIDO MAZZONI (D. 1518)

Bust of a boy

c. 1498

RCIN 73197

This extraordinarily life-like terracotta bust shows a young child wearing a tunic fastened with a ribbon point. The green fabric has been represented by applying green glaze over an incised layer of foil, perhaps intended to imitate cloth of gold. The richness of the dress, coupled with the bust’s royal provenance and the child’s age, have led to conjecture that it depicts a young Henry VIII.
