ROBERT PEAKE (ACTIVE 1580-1635)

Henry, Prince of Wales with Robert Devereux, 3rd Earl of Essex in the Hunting Field

c.1605

RCIN 404440

While the clothing worn by the two figures in this hunting scene appears similar, in fact subtle variations are used to indicate the difference in social status between them. Prince Henry’s doublet and breeches are decorated with elaborate gold thread embroidery and his transparent linen cuffs and collar are edged with lace. The applied gold decoration on Robert Devereux’s garments is largely confined to the seams, his linen is plain and he has removed his hat as a mark of deference.
