Hat badge with St George and the dragon

c. 1520

RCIN 442208

Bonnets, worn throughout the Tudor period, were often accessorised with a hat badge pinned to the turned-up brim, as seen for example in the miniature of Henry VIII by Horenbout. This example demonstrates the complexity that such items could achieve. St George holds a sword above his head with a blue-skinned dragon at his feet. A tiny princess kneels to one side, while in the distance is a walled town.
