ATTRIBUTED TO WILLIAM SCROTS (ACTIVE 1537-53)

Elizabeth I when a Princess

c.1546

RCIN 404444

Aged around 13 the young Princess Elizabeth wears an outfit composed of two expensive fabrics. Her crimson gown would have been created using a costly dye derived from crushed insects, while the foresleeves and matching forepart are made of cloth of silver tissued with gold. The artist clearly shows that this fabric has tiny loops of gold thread raised above the surface. By law fabric of this kind was only to be worn by members of the royal family, although interestingly at this date Elizabeth was still officially deemed illegitimate.
