The sitter’s russet velvet gown is trimmed with lynx fur, which by a law of 1533 was not to be worn by anyone below the rank of duke. The sleeves of this gown can be worn in a number of different ways – Edward has chosen to put his arms through slits in the upper arm, leaving the rest of the sleeve hanging and revealing his white satin doublet beneath, the surface of which has been slashed and the layer beneath pulled out to form decorative puffs.
