LORENZO LOTTO (VENICE C. 1480-LORETO 1556)

Andrea Odoni

Signed and dated 1527

RCIN 405776

Andrea Odoni was a Venetian merchant, art collector, and an important member of the Venetian citizen (‘cittadini’) class. He is not shown wearing a ‘vesta’, the traditional official dress for men of the noble and ‘cittadini’ classes in Venice above the age of 25. Instead, he wears a fur-lined black silk gown of a style also seen in many of Holbein’s portraits of German merchants painted in England during the 1530s, an indication of how styles could be similar across geographically disparate areas.
