JOHN HAMILTON MORTIMER (1740-79)

A concert

dated 1779?

RCIN 917660

Rowlandson may have met Mortimer at the Duke of Richmond’s sculpture gallery at Whitehall, where young artists gathered to study drawing from casts. Rowlandson adopted the older artist’s technique of shading with zigzags and dots, which is used to good effect in this humorous drawing of a group of ill-assorted musicians. Ex. cat.
