Gloucester Place was the London house where Mrs Clarke had entertained members of high society, including the Duke of York. Here the two are shown with Mrs Clarke’s friend Mrs Taylor discussing the list of promotions. Rowlandson criticises the Duke as corrupt and unfaithful. His behaviour is contrasted with that of the loyal husband John Gilpin, the subject of a comic poem by William Cowper quoted at the bottom.
