These lodgers are prostitutes: the second-floor inhabitants are in a state of dishevelled undress, while one of the finely dressed first-floor lodgers touches her breast in a provocative gesture. Lodging houses in Union Street, now part of Riding House Street in central London, were known to be inhabited by ‘girls of the town’. Purchased by George IV when Prince of Wales, 1790 Cat. 18
