THOMAS ROWLANDSON (1757-1827)

Well at Harrogate, Yorkshire

c. 1800?

RCIN 913687

A watercolour of people around a well at Harrogate. Fashionable crowds flocked to take the waters at Harrogate, a noted spa. Rowlandson shows one of the wells in the town, with people gathered to meet and to drink the mineral water. The coaches in the background give an impression of constant arrivals and departures.
