Tipu Sultan, the eighteenth-century ruler of Mysore, India, took the tiger as his personal symbol. This impressive golden head was part of Tipu's octagonal throne which was further adorne with smaller tigers' heads and a jewel-encrusted bird of good fortune. The tongue of the tiger is articulated to increase the impression of a roaring beast.
