Lacquer of this type is created by scattering gold dust into the resin of the lacquer as it solidifies, and burnishing it with charcoal. In Japanese this lacquer is known as nashiji from the word nashi, meaning pear, as the speckled golden appearance was thought to resemble the skin of the fruit.
