Frances Stuart, Duchess of Richmond (1648-1702)

before 1662

RCIN 404514

This is one of the 'Windsor Beauties', a set of eleven portraits of celebrated women at the Restoration court. Frances Stuart was famous for refusing to become the mistress of Charles II. She is shown holding a bow to associate her with the mythological huntress Diana, and is dressed in sumptuous gold-coloured silk satin.
