WORSHIPFUL COMPANY OF GIRDLERS [LONDON]

Coronation girdle

1936

RCIN 75063

The girdle, or sword belt, is used during the Coronation service when the monarch is invested with the Coronation Robes and other symbols of royalty. These include a Sword of Offering which is 'girded' or fastened at the sovereign's waist. The Archbishop delivers the Sword saying that it should be used for the protection of good and the punishment of evil. Traditionally the girdle is supplied new by the livery company for each Coronation.
