SIR NORMAN HARTNELL (1901-79)

Evening Dress

1975

RCIN 100061

The Queen wore this striking evening dress, with a bold combination of colours in sky blue and pale pink, during her first State Visit to Japan in the spring of 1975. The colour scheme is a tribute to the spring cherry blossom season, which is of national importance in Japanese culture. Hartnell’s design also show the heavy influence of 1970s fashion with its long draped sleeves and soft, flowing silhouette.
