SIR NORMAN HARTNELL

Dress and Jacket

1967

RCIN 250311

This outfit was worn by The Queen to invest Sir Francis Chichester with a knighthood, following his solo circumnavigation of the globe in 1967. Chichester became the first person to sail single-handed around the world in his yacht 'Gipsy Moth IV' following his 226-day voyage from West to East via the great Capes. Hartnell’s ensemble, in nautical white and navy blue, bears the hallmarks of 1960s fashion from the three-quarter length sleeves of the jacket to the A-line skirt of the dress, which modestly pays reference to the mini-skirt.
