SIR NORMAN HARTNELL (1901-79)

Day dress and hat

1977

RCIN 250018

This green and white ensemble was worn by The Queen on several occasions during the Silver Jubilee Tour of 1977, marking 25 years of The Queen’s accession. The soft silhouette, bow-tied neck and floral-print silk are all hallmarks of 1970s design. The milliner Simone Mirman, who regularly designed hats to coordinate with Hartnell’s daywear, appliqued the matching silk to the underside of the brim of the Breton-style hat and applied a further band of the fabric around the crown.
