ADRIAEN VAN DE VELDE (AMSTERDAM 1636-AMSTERDAM 1672)

Figures on the Coast at Scheveningen

Signed and dated 1660

RCIN 404802

In this scene, people flock to Scheveningen to enjoy themselves in the pleasant weather. The huts on the left provide both shelter for fishermen and changing rooms for swimmers, and an open-sided cart transports visitors along the sand. Van de Velde’s beach paintings influenced popular nineteenth-century seaside views. Acquired by George IV in 1814 No. 14
