JAN WOUWERMAN (HAARLEM 1629-HAARLEM 1666)

A Winter Scene with a Fair on the Ice

Signed and dated 1657

RCIN 407219

This atmospheric scene captures the fun of winter with adults and children skating, playing and riding in horsedrawn sleighs. Like his brother Philips, Jan Wouwermans creates a harmoniously balanced composition both visually and allegorically –where the solidity of the respectable country house on the left contrasts with the impermanence of the beer tent and of the ice itself. Acquired by George IV in 1811 No. 7
