SALOMON VAN RUYSDAEL (NAARDEN C. 1602-HAARLEM 1670)

A River Landscape with Sailing Boats

Signed and dated 1651

RCIN 405517

Salomon van Ruysdael specialised in river scenes. Here he captures a moment at dawn on an estuary. The sun is rising as men are ferried in rowing boats to their vessels. The daringly low horizon line ensures the domination of sky over water, but the artist seamlessly blends the silvery tones of both to great poetic effect. First recorded in the Royal Collection in 1849 No. 22
