Nature and society blend harmoniously in this landscape where and rich and poor work together, making use of the canal for transport, sustenance and washing. The vivid naturalism of the scene influenced John Constable, and its matter-of-fact viewpoint anticipated the Impressionists. Acquired by George IV in 1814 No. 18
