In the spring of 1862, the Prince of Wales was sent on an educational journey to Palestine and the Near East and Francis Bedford was commissioned as the official photographer. Despite many difficulties, Bedford managed to produce 210 plates, which undoubtedly represent some of his best work. 172 prints were exhibited at the German Gallery in Bond Street later in the same year.
