Elias Ashmole had begun researching the history of the Order of the Garter during the Commonwealth with a view to producing this lavish publication. Following the Restoration he received the full support of Charles II who also appointed him Windsor Herald and consulted him on matters of Garter tradition and ceremony. This etching by Wenceslaus Hollar depicts the procession of Charles II and the Garter Knights to St George's Chapel, Windsor. Charles kept a copy of Ashmole’s book in his private library at Whitehall. Cat. 35
