Charles II departed from Scheveningen, near The Hague on the Dutch coast, on 23 May 1660. He travelled on board the newly renamed ship, The Royal Charles, with his two brothers, James, Duke of York, and Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and set sail for Dover. The huge crowds who watched the king's departure for his homeland can be seen on the wide expanse of beach and undulating dunes, with the English fleet shown in the distance on the right. Cat. 16
