WENCESLAUS HOLLAR (1607-77); PUBLISHED BY JOHN OGILBY (1600–1676)

The Citie of EDENBVRGH from the South

1670

RCIN 805283

Hollar's bird's-eye view of Edinburgh, looking north, takes in the entire city, marked at the western end by the castle on its rocky outcrop, and by the Palace of Holyroodhouse at the other extremity. These ancient royal structures are linked by the (here unseen) thoroughfare of the Canongate (as it is known at the Palace end), or the ‘Royal Mile’.
