In contrast with the library at St. James's Palace, Charles II's library in Whitehall consisted chiefly of books presented to him or that once were in his father's library. Many of them were personalised dedication copies given to the king, bound by various workshops in a great number of different styles. We know about Charles II's Whitehall library because all books have a distinctive shelfmark through which they can be identified.
