Charles I at his Trial

Charles I is shown at his trial before the High Court of Justice in the Great Hall of the Palace of Westminster in January 1649. Accused of being a ‘tyrant, traitor, murderer and … enemy to the Commonwealth of England’, the king refused to co-operate, enter
a plea or acknowledge the legitimacy of the court. He was found guilty and executed on 30 January. Edward Bower depicts the king sympathetically and conveys his sense of dignity by showing him seated in the crimson velvet chair that he used throughout his trial.
