Among Joseph Smith’s collection of drawings by Canaletto was a series of ten studies of churches and squares around Venice. The church of the Redentore (‘Redeemer’), designed by Andrea Palladio, was built to mark the delivery of Venice from the terrible plague of 1575–6.
