CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

The Piazza and Piazzetta from the Torre dell'Orologio towards San Giorgio

1744

RCIN 400513

These paintings, with distinctive wide angle views and distortion of spatial distances, are part of a set of four of the Piazza San Marco. Here Canaletto has opened out the view and splayed out San Marco and the Palazzo Ducale so that they gradually diminish deep into the background. Only the end window of the Palazzo Ducale would be visible from this viewpoint. Included is the whole range of society going about their daily business.
