CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Campo Santi Giovanni e Paolo

c.1735-38

RCIN 400715

Santi Giovanni e Paolo was the principal Dominican church in Venice. On the left is the Scuola Grande di San Marco; in the centre Andrea Verrocchio’s (1435–1488) sculpture of Bartolomeo Colleoni. Canaletto worked out the composition in a sketchbook, making adjustments so that both the bridge on the left and the houses on the right could be included. The fall of light would be impossible in reality.
