SEBASTIANO RICCI (BELLUNO 1659-VENICE 1734)

The Finding of Moses

c.1720-25

RCIN 404764

This painting shows the Old Testament story of the daughter of the Pharaoh who discovered Moses in a basket of rushes, cradled by his sister Miriam, and took him in. Sebastiano probably based his painting on a now lost version of the subject by the sixteenth-century painter Paolo Veronese, which was then in Smith’s collection.
