SEBASTIANO RICCI (BELLUNO 1659-VENICE 1734)

Diana and Callisto

c.1707

RCIN 907188

Sebastiano painted several versions of the mythological episode of the goddess Diana casting out her pregnant attendant Callisto. This drawing probably relates to a fresco in Palazzo Pitti in Florence, where Sebastiano worked from about 1704–11. The delicate washes reflect his encounters with the work of Bolognese artists in his early training.
