CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A Capriccio View with Ruins

c.1742-44

RCIN 405079

This composition combines imaginary and real architecture in a picturesque setting. Both this painting and its pair, on display at the other end of the wall, show a great debt to Marco Ricci’s capriccio paintings, which Canaletto would have been able to study in Smith’s collection.
