CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

Venice: Piazza San Marco, looking west from the Procuratie Nuove

c.1745

RCIN 907433

The viewpoint is close to that of the drawing above, looking in the opposite direction. Canaletto has stepped a little further out from under the arcade, and the heads of lions and warriors in the frieze at top left have come into view. The figures in the distance are drawn too large, thus reducing the apparent width of the Piazza.
