1772

RCIN 1121338

Ariosto's romance on the travails of the Saracen knight Orlando, desperately in love with the princess Angelica, was first published in 1516. Every single page of the richly embellished Zatta edition has a decorative border, with an illustrated plate at the start of each canto. Canto 19 shows the injured soldier Medoro discovered by Angelica. With the help of the shepherd, she heals his wounds. The couple fall in love and marry, sending Orlando into despair.
