CANALETTO (VENICE 1697-VENICE 1768)

A Capriccio View with a Pointed Arch

c.1742-44

RCIN 405078

The strong colours, dramatic lighting and threatening sky give this capriccio a strikingly forceful effect. A shaft of light from the right passes through the Colosseum on the horizon. The painting includes buildings and motifs recorded by Canaletto during a trip he made to Padua in about 1740–41.
