FRANCIS BEDFORD (1815-94)

The Mosque of Omar from the Governor's House [Mosque of the Dome of the Rock, Jerusalem]

6 Apr 1862

RCIN 2700932

In 1862, only a few photographers had been granted permission to photograph the Dome of the Rock and the area immediately surrounding the shrine, known as the Haram al-Sharif. Bedford took every opportunity to photograph the site, knowing that images like these would be novel and exciting for audiences back in Britain. Acquired by the Prince of Wales, 1862
