After Napoleon’s invasion of Egypt in 1798, scholars and artists travelled alongside soldiers and diplomats to explore the Pharaonic ruins along the Nile. The history of ancient Egypt was uncovered through the surviving ruins and extensive excavations. The Prince of Wales and his companions spent time in Alexandria and Cairo, but most of their visit to Egypt was spent sailing along the Nile in boats provided by Muhammad Sa’id Pasha, the Viceroy of Egypt. The party stopped at the most interesting sites, including Philae, Edfu and Luxor, following suggestions in their Murray’s Handbook for Travellers.
